CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Chester Barklight
Character Canon: Tales of Phantasia
History: Wikia!
AU History:
Chester grew up in Union with his much younger sister, Ami Barklight. Their parents died when she was just born and Chester was about twelve. He and Ami went to live with Cress Albane's family, his childhood best friend. Because Cress's father was a Ranger, both worked hard to follow in his footsteps. While Chester and Ami had support from Cress's mother and father, his father's job and his mother's illness kept them from helping to raise Ami. Thus, the responsibility fell to Chester alone. Because Cress's father and his own late father were Rangers, Chester worked to become a Ranger himself at a young age. At fifteen he joined the ranks with his best friend Cress. Chester was a valuable asset, not only because of his way with Pokemon but his skill with a bow. He can take down a rampaging Tauros with a single shot from the top of the city walls. Much like in canon, when Chester was seventeen and Ami was about five years old, Ami was killed. During the Earthquakes when Pokemon and people alike had been in panic, Chester left Ami at the Ranger Outpost where he usually did during the day to go and help the damage of the walls. However, she ran off to find him when they didn't come back by noon like he'd said. She was caught up in a Pokemon stampede where the walls had been broken open while trying to bring him and Cress their lunch and was trampled to death. Being aware of the stampeding Pokemon, the two boys were hurrying to divert it away from the city when Chester found his sister's crumpled body. Blaming himself even more than the Rangers and Guards stationed in the Outpost who'd promised to look out for her, Chester carries the weight of her death further than anyone. Knowing that Team Evolution had caused the Earthquakes to begin with fills him with rage toward the outsiders, but he's yet to take any action against them. Ami's death is incredibly fresh to him and mention of it hurts him deeply.
Canon Personality:
Chester can be sour and cold when he doesn't get his way or if his pride is threatened. He has a lot of opinions that he holds dear and he'll argue them to the end. Because of his prideful nature, Chester can sometimes seem stuck up or angry with even minor annoyances. Even as a child, Chester's arrogance caused him to think of himself as better than his best friend Cress. He was a better hunter. He was more mature due to his parent's dying. He had more worldy experience. Because of this it caused him to, in a way, be a leader with his best friend. However, due to the events of his sister dying and Dhaos attacking them, Chester jumped to attack him himself when Edward transferred Mint and Cress to the past without him. When Cress and Mint returned with Arche and Klaus to fight Dhaos once again, Chester was unable to do anything and severely "under leveled" compared to the others. He was instantly pushed to the backseat, as it were. Because of this he gets very moody with the rest of the cast, especially Arche Klein.
In the reverse, Chester is also very kind. To those who are in the same position as him, Chester likes to think that he's very understanding of their problems no matter what. He can be really brash like this, and rude without thinking. His way is the right way, and so on. Just because someone's situation may be different, Chester can be a bit of a know-it-all when it comes to his advice. And if they disagree with him he'll probably get pretty buttmad. Because he loves to argue, though, this can rile him up rather than make him moody and ignore his problems. He likes to face things head on. Because of his brash nature, it gets him into trouble a lot. Besides the obvious confrontation with Dhaos, it leads to things like him trying to peek at the girls's bath and getting a bucket thrown at his head. Cress is, oddly enough, his voice of reason. "I told you that would end badly!!"
Because of his pride, Chester is horribly determined in everything he does. His nature is unwieldy and rash, but he likes to think he takes everything in stride as it happens even though he really doesn't at all. When his focus is in the right place though, he's unstoppable. He doesn't get along at all with those who have a lot of the same personality as him, though. As mentioned before, he gets along horribly with Arche, who's as headstrong and... stupid as he is, really. They can get into arguments over how they're sitting for crying out loud. When it counts though, Chester will even help out people he dislikes if it's for their common goal. He begrudgingly fights alongside the young witch with just as much passion as he would anyone else.
His favorite person, besides his best friend Cress, of course, is his little sister Ami. Chester dotes on her constantly, bringing her fruits and toys and keeping their house big and nice even if they live by themselves. Because of their parents's death, Chester seems determined to make her happy always and never wants to see her sad. That's why, when she's brutally murdered, Chester can barely function. He completely shuts down, refusing to leave her and the other villagers without graves. He can't face the future. Because of this, his development rides completely on Dhaos's defeat. Truly, he only cares about his revenge. Ami's death shapes Chester's personality as a whole and makes him who he truly is.
AU Deviation:
Since Chester has been a Ranger since he was only thirteen or fourteen, it's basically his life save taking care of Ami. He throws himself head first into things, much like he does in canon, but he's a little more responsible about it? He has his Pokemon to think of, after all. Because of his bonds with his Pokemon (and Ami's Pokemon after her death,) Chester is more mindful about the people and Pokemon around him and maybe a little more sensitive. Instead of charging straight in to attack Dhaos (even though he's an archer?? for some reason???? what the hell Chester,) maybe he would have thought about the Demon King's retaliation first. He's still headstrong and kind of dumb in a very shounen way, but he's a little more thoughtful.
Also, as he and Ami were taken in by Cress's parents when their own died, he's a little less independent and maybe a little more humble. He's still scared of not being able to lead, but he's a lot more grounded in the idea that there's things he can't do himself.
Canon Abilities:
Chester is a master archer. In the remake, he also is able to use artes, or magic, to charge up his arrows with elemental attacks.
Enlightened Abilities: Mastery of Battle
Chester is a Grass/Flying type Enlightened. This suits his contradictory personality, as well as his skills. Like in canon, Chester wields a bow with grace, but his Enlightened Abilities help him a lot with it. His Flying typing has given him sharp eyes, letting him see huge distances away, like a hawk (or rather, a Pigeot.) His affinity with Grass also helps him utilize wooden bows, always feeling light in his grasp and easy to bend and aim. Eventually, I would like him to be able to use a wind type attack to be able to fire a ton of arrows at once, that kind of thing.
Starter Pokémon: Chester will have a Trapinch named Digger. Ami named him. I'd really like a roll for a shiny for his Trapinch because Flygon has blue Chester hair when it's shiny. He also has a Cleffa named Apple, who was Ami's only bonded Pokemon friend.
Notes/Special Considerations:
Chester will be super broken up over the death of his sister and his manpain's gonna be huge. He's probably going to be throwing himself into really, really stupid Ranger related situations. Also, I'd like him to have been one of/the first on the scene to bury the death after the Earthquakes.

He hasn't spoken to anyone for days. His world was muffled, like his head was being held under water. He could remember the scene clearly. He and Cress had been walking back from their rounds around the broken wall, to see what could be done about the rampaging Pokemon. Even though the situation had been serious, they had joked around. Laughed. Cress had wondered what they'd have for dinner when they got back. Chester had kept trying to shove his best friend off his feet when the aftershocks had trembled through the ground. They had been stupid, carefree teenagers then. The rumble of trampling Pokemon nearby had alerted them away from their patrol and they'd gone running to see if they needed to diverge more Pokemon away from the hole in the wall of Union. There had been massive amounts of them, of all sorts. As big as Bouffalants and as small as Houndours and Scraggys, all had been caught up in the rush. They'd noticed the little Pokemon in need of aide first. Cress had gone to put up a flare for help while Chester waded through the injured to see if he could do anything.
And then he'd seen her and his whole world had come crashing down. Chester could remember every detail. Ami had been laying on her side, her hair strewn out and dirty around her head. One of her pigtails had fallen, her bow laying trampled in the dirt a few feet away. Most of the damage had been to her chest and legs, blood soaking through her little dress. Chester had nearly fainted, or vomited, or died of shock then and there. He had managed a few steps forward before he'd fallen to his knees and cradled her against him. Her tiny body was broken, barely five years old and dead in his arms. He hadn't heard Cress catching up to him, or heard the reinforcements arrive. He'd been coaxed up by one of his superiors and they'd put Ami on a cart and taken her back into the city. He'd wandered out into the forest for a while. Cress had come to find him, hours later, and taken him home. The next day, Chester had helped bury the dead. He'd visited the little overturned lump of earth that was Ami's final resting place more often than he had his parents's graves just a few feet away from hers since their death five years prior. Ami hadn't remembered them, and he'd tried to forget.
He left a parcel of apples cut out she liked them and a bundle of flowers, kneeling down to tidy away any leaves that had blown onto her grave. He visited her grave every day. He barely spoke a word to anyone until the cause of the Earthquakes had been found, and Team Evolution had arrived at their doorstep. With a name and face to put to his grief, Chester wasn't sure how to respond. Their parents had been killed by Pokemon. His sister had been killed by humans.
He decides to wait.
